Setting up Version Cue on a server for multiple user access?

What are the recommended steps?

Basically I want to have all the files on one server & give access to users.

1 file server & 10 Client machines.

Hi,
so just install the VC on your dedicated server.
Then go to your server machine start VC and go to the administration UI. You can reach it via <http://localhost:3703>
Then make sure that your server allows remote access. This can be verified by looking into the advanced section of preferences. Make sure "Share projects with others" is checked.

The next step is to install all your suite apps on the 10 client machines. You do not have to install VC there, because the access is built into the applications.

Open f.e. InDesign and activate VC in the preferences->File Handling section. Check the activate VC box there. Shutdown and Restart InDesign and choose File->Open. Click the VersionCue Icon in the OpenDialog. Now you should see your dedicated VC server appear in the list. You can dig into it and f.e. create a project then and store your files.

If you don't see the VC server appearing, then there might be a problem with a firewall or a switch then. The thing is that VC uses SLP for server lookup which is using TCP port 427. This port should be a. routed through switched segments and b. configured in the firewall to get through in the inner segments.

If this does not work for you, you can click the red "Tools" menu in the upper right of the open and save dialog and choose "connect to..." there you can type in your IP address of the dedicated server directly. f.e. <http://><ip-address>:3703

Thanks you so much for the detailed response; it was very easy to follow the steps posted.

I have one additional question:

How do you create a project outside the “My documents” folder?
that seems to be the default location; I want to run this off my server’s D drive but I am unable to create the project outside of the “My documents” folder ?

Hi,
to move the client side work area just move your VersionCue folder located inside your "My Documents" folder to your drive d:
Make sure that you move the whole folder not just the contents. In addition delete the original VersionCue folder in "My Documents" after moving. Be sure to empty the Trash as well. Also this will work reliably on windows only.

After re starting the apps on your client machine you can check out and check in files to the new location.

Please notice that this is required only on the client machines. The machine where you have installed the VC server should not be modified.

"Please notice that this is required only on the client machines. The machine where you have installed the VC server should not be modified"

If I am reading this correctly; I am pretty much stuck with the original VC server install?
Since the VC server automatically assigns the (database/my doc/workspace) to the C drive - where I only have 20 Gig as apposed to the 240 on D.

Would installing the software (custom-install) on D, resolve this issue? any other work around(s)?

Thanks again

No, you are not stuck with the VC server location. To move the VC ##SERVER## data files just go to the version cue control panel to the locations tab and choose new locations for your data and backup folders.

As I said, the "workspace" directory you are referring to is the location where the VC ##CLIENTS## store their local copies of the content that resides in the VC server. So, if you do not plan to use Suite apps such as InDesign or GoLive on your dedicated VC server machine, then you do not have to care about such locations. Only if you plan to sit at your server machine and use Suite apps then you have to move the "VersionCue" folder from your "My Documents" folder to drive d as well.

Hi

Thanks for your patients & the detailed descriptions; I think I did not use the right terminology & confused the matter..

Client side: fully setup & completed.

Server Side:

I have followed the directions in your pervious post and was able to redirect VC’s Data to the D drive..

Created a project name 2004-2005

But when I launched the Photoshop on the server & created a file.. I noticed that file was created under

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Version Cue\2004-2005 \documents

This seems to be the default location for projects when they are created in Version Cue admin utility.

What is saved on the D drive in the data folder(s) then…? I am guessing that I shouldn't have started an application on the server, I could be wrong

What purpose did it serve to move the data to the D drive, when we are still saving the files under the

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\My Documents\Version Cue\2004-2005 \documents

?

Sorry for all trouble; I am not usually this dense. ;)

New issue on the client side:

Moving the “Version Cue” folder to a different location.

Very unstable.. The solution works initially but after you create a new file..The “Version Cue” Folder defaults back to “My Documents” folder.

OK

I will be answering some of my own questions incase someone else encounters this issue(s):

When the “Version Cue” folder appears under the “My Documents” folder; this is the users/station personal work space. Regardless if the user was on the server or Client..

That work space is for editing file(s) locally, after checking out a file or before checking a file into Version Cue’s Data folder

Once the Version Cue Data folder location has been changed from the Admin utility. File(s) get stored in the desired location. In my case they are stored under the D drive..

What confused me was that file(s) were put under the Data folder(s) & divided up in a specific (adobe format) .. I was looking for the entire file(s).. its seems that Version Cue does its own magic with partitioning and dividing up individual files.

I am still having the issue posted above on the client side thou..

What you saying about the personal workspace is exactly right. Every file that is opened for (a.) viewing, (b.) editing, is copied from the VC server to the personal workarea under the "MyDocuments" folder. In case you have installed both, the VC server and the client apps like InDesign on the same machine, the machine is both, a client and a server and therefore has both locations, the personal workarea under the "MyDocuments" and the server's data directory, normally located under "C:\Program Files\Adobe\Version Cue\data". This directory contains all files in all projects and all versions of the files. Even if you delete your local personal workarea under "MyDocuments", the server still has the contents of the projects.

Regarding your confusion about the format the files are stored under the server's data directory, here are some background informations.
The server stores the file contents under a filename independant naming scheme which includes the several versions of a file as well.

IT IS NOT DESIRED FOR A USER TO ACCESS THE CONTENTS IN THIS DIR.

This is because this is the servers storage of the file contents and has to be under exclusive access for the server. If a user wants to export the contents from the server, he can just download them to his personal workarea via the synchronize command in the "Tools" menu of the Open/Save dialog or he could choose Export them from the Admin UI of the VC server.

Thanks a million Frank;

I guess VC does all we want it to do except relocating the Client workspace to a different location/drive (other than My Documents).. That’s not too bad I suppose

apart from that VC ROCKS
