Grey pointer on a grey background

Please make something with the pointer.
You can't see it on a medium gray background at all, such an annoying thing.
It must be black or white on a gray background.

would be nice, but there are workarounds so i'm not holding my breath. you can press the crtl or spacebar keys to bring up the move or hand tool temporarily and get your bearings. the adobe guys have said they'd have to do some major work to handle the mouse instead of relying on windows to do it.

Major work. We can't have that now.

There's a simpler path to take here: there's no reason why cursors can't have two display modes. XOR cursors, or black & white cursors. I would much prefer caps lock toggling between two modes like that, than toggling between precise and brush size. A marching ants striping of the cursor would enable it to be seen against grey (they wouldn't have to actually march, like the marquee, of course). But rather than moan about the lack of the sophisticated cursor draw modes on the Mac that Windows lacks, why not just choose a different path altogether? Don't depend on a draw mode that doesn't exist.

This is going to stay a problem, especially for people painting bump maps for 3D. I'm finding it a problem as I am lately creating layer elements where the pixels are middle grey, and I'm using pattern overlays to fill in detail (this is because I spend a lot of time shaping various elements, and using pattern fill makes painting adding and subtracting texture very easy. And the patterns are often in overlay mode, so I can take advantage of gradient and color overlays as well).

I agree Harry, it just needs to be solved somehow.

It could easily be an automatic mode ... sample the colors beneath and if it's gray ... switch it to a white cursor temporarily.

switch it to a white cursor temporarily.

or black... :)

I like harry's toggle idea. eliminate or move the precise/brush size toggle and replace with cursor color: dynamic(xor)/black/white toggle. each press cycles through the list.

Count me in as one who would really like some type of toggle for the cursor color.

I have a major client who I do executive portraits for and the have standardized on a neutral gray background. It's really tough cloning out stray hairs, etc. when you can't see the brush.

I have an even easier solution, one that doesn't require PS to make any
active checks on the color underneath the cursor or change it when you
move the mouse around. Simply design a cursor which has both XOR pixels
and black or white pixels alternating. Or just black and white. This
is already possible and can be done without any active code in the
program checking what color the background beneath the cursor is. If
you make the cursor all one color, there's going to be problems no
matter what color you use. Black cursors will disappear against black,
white will disappear against white, XOR cursors disappear against middle
grey. But a 2-colored cursor would show up against almost anything.

Darrel, that's precisely what I suggested in the earlier post.

Please Adobe, Photoshop for Windows needs a solution to this problem and we have been bringing it up over and over.

I think it's pretty clear by now (several Photoshop versions later) that Microsoft is not going to do it. I understand it doesn't mean much if you don't have to deal with it constantly but trust us on this, it's a pain.

With all the respect and admiration you guys deserve (and I mean this sincerely), please do something!

Try using Photoshop CS2....

Well, that's a welcome comment. What ended up being the chosen solution to the drawmode issue?

Well, that's great news, Chris, thanks very much. I have something to very much look forward to in CS2.

Chris Cox said: " Try using Photoshop CS2...."

I searched the Photoshop Help file under "Brushes" and couldn't find how to change the brush color from grey to whatever.

Now that I have CS2 loaded, how is this accomplished?

dave_milbut@adobeforums.com

it's automatic. make a grayscale gradient and move a brush over it and you can see it for yourself.

Sweet!

Thanks, Dave.

As sophisticated as PS CS is I'm really surprised that there are not adequate options for the cursor display. When using any of the smaller brush sizes, it get completely lost in the image. This is VERY frustrating.
