How many times has this been complained about, and how many versions have come and gone with this behavior still present? If you change the file format from a layered to non-layered format within the Save dialogue, it appends " copy" to the name. Please, remove this behavior, or permit a preference override. I can't tell you how many times I think I've saved over a file from a working PSD, only to have not done so, and added a " copy" file to the directory instead.

And, for free, I'll tell you why I often work on a TGA, add layers to it while I'm working, and then save it over itself, instead of working on a PSD, and saving that, and occasionally saving out a flattened version: because Save As doesn't remember last saved directory and file type! I have a tree I need to keep free of working files, that is only for final files, and I can't be sticking huge PSD files in it willy-nilly.
