Where do you put your "private" photos in the Organizer?

Hello all-

I have a question for the group regarding "private" photos. Essentially, I have some photos of my wife (nothing extreme, but photos that I wouldn't want my friends to see). I'd like to import them into PSE3 so that they can be backed up with the same backup procedure as my other photos. However, I wouldn't want a friend scrolling through my photos to see them. The "hidden" tag is not the answer, because that tag just stares at you from the panel, and every single person who's ever viewed my catalog has, without fail, asked me what that is for.

Ideally there would be a password protected tag. For example, a tag called "private" that, if clicked, would prompt you to enter a password before you could view photos with that tag.

Until that day arrives (if ever), what are any of you doing with photos that you don't want displayed in your catalog.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

I guess the most secure way is to create a special album for private pictures. Sure you loose the integrity with your other photos, and you'll probably have to back up each album...
Anyway, I like your idea of a kind of security level, so one has to log on to be able to see certain tagged pictures.

Bret,

My first thought is to create an additional catalog for these photos.

The general advice is to not create multiple catalogs (with exceptions like having separate catalogs for work photos and home photos). However, in your case you want isolation of these photos and you do not want them usually included in your tag searches or scrolling in the Photo Browser.

An additional catalog is a separate Windows file. File > Catalog allows you to switch between catalogs.

What do others think?

I posted the same idea in the cross-post in the PSA forum a few minutes ago :-)

Initially I thought of another catalog, as that would be secure. Another option would be to select a very boring picture and then make a stack with it as the top image and the pics of your wife underneath. Just a thought ...

Of course, if you'd like to post some of these photos we could give a more informed opinion ... :-)

That's what I call creative thinking! Now we know what the stacks were meant for ;-)

Collin-

The separate catalog idea was something I had thought of as well, but then it would require that I backup separate catalogs. While not a huge deal, I'd prefer something in my main catalog. That said, I think the "stacks" idea will work. If nobody comes up with any other ideas, I'm going to use that one. Thanks.

As for posting the pics . . . I don't think so. ;)

Sooner or later someone will find those 'private' photos......

I just installed PE3 and Organizer Saturday, so I'm far from an expert. But, I seem to recall you can create a Collection on external media; i.e. CD or HDD and open it in Organizer when you wish. Does anyone know if I'm correct?

This shoul dreally be a new thread ...

A collection is only a reference to series of images from the catalog, which have a defined order/sequence. You can import images from a CD, if you wish - when you do, you have the option of copying them to your hard drive or leaving them where they are.

The obvious answer is don't put them in folders watched by PSE. I keep
private photos several directories deep in folders with quite
uninteresting, or misleading names. If you are using WinNT, or similar,
you can also restrict access, and/or add password protection to the
folder. You might also remove that folder from all shares...
