Ordering Prints from Elements 3

This is the unformatted text-only version of this page: Ordering Prints from Elements 3

I have been trying to order prints of corrected photos that I did in E3 through Elements on-line ordering service. I keep getting a message stating "could not find proxy server" which is Ofoto. Any ideas about what is going on or how to correct it? I have checked and I can get on-line.
Thanks,
Sharon

Sharon, are you using a (desktop or hardware) firewall? This might get in the way. Try to temporarily disable the firewall and see if it helps. If it does, you'll have to adjust the rules on your firewall appropriately, so can switch it on again.

Alexander,

Thanks for the tip. I tried disabling it but still no luck. I may have to just order directly through Ofoto as I've done in the past.

Sharon,

Can you tell me what happens when you copy this url into your browser?

<http://adobeols.ofoto.com/services/AdobeOrderPrintMXServlet>

It should say "Hi there, this is an AXIS service!".

If you do not get this response, there might be a firewall or proxy blocking access to this site.

Also, just for clarification, do you get this when clicking "Order Online" or "Share Online"?

Barry,

I did get the "Hi there" message. Also , Perhaps there will be a form for invoking the service here....

When I click "Order Online" from E3 I get "Please wait". The photographs appear to be loading then I get the window called Adobe Photoshop Services provided by Ofoto and the message "could not find proxy server.

I have also tried disabling the Firewall and get the same results.

Any ideas on what I should do from here?
Thanks,
Sharon

Try this:

1) Launch Internet Explorer
2) Choose Tools > Internet Options
3) Click on Connections tab and then LAN Settings

Do you have "Use a proxy server..." checked?

Barry,

Yes, it is checked. I also tried using it without it checked but still no luck. I called my internet provider and they checked my settings which all seemed to be in order. I finally sent an email to Ofoto's customer service regarding this problem so maybe they can come up with a solution.

I appreciate your suggestions.
Thanks,
Sharon

I've been having the same problem. It appears to be multiple bugs in Elements when a proxy server is configured in Windows' Internet Options. Sharon, the reason it doesn't work when you unchecked "Use a proxy server..." is that you probably didn't exit and restart Elements after you unchecked it. Apparently Elements only checks this setting when it starts. Exiting the Ofoto ordering service alone isn't enough.

The bugs in Elements relating to this are as follows:

1) Elements apparently doesn't check the "Exceptions" list in the Advanced Proxy Settings dialog. Including *.ofoto.com or adobeols.ofoto.com (or even the current ip address) has no effect.

2) Elements assumes that if you have an HTTP proxy (as I do--AdSubtract), then you have an HTTPS proxy (which I don't as AdSubtract doesn't proxy secure connections). Since the HTTPS proxy server entry is blank, Elements gets upset.

So one workaround is to turn off "Use a proxy server..." *before* starting Elements. The other is to set up a proxy server that can handle HTTPS connections. I did this (using privoxy on a linux box), and once a valid HTTPS proxy is named in the Advanced Proxy Settings Elements is happy.

Doug,
Thanks for this information. I am away from home for the holiday but will try again once I return.
I appreciate your help in this matter.

Hi Sharon,

Apart from what Doug has suggested, also try this

1) Launch Internet Explorer
2) Choose Tools > Internet Options
3) Click on Advanced tab.
4) Check the checkbox for 'Use HTTP 1.1 through proxy connections', if you are using a proxy sever.

Make sure to re-launch PSE3. You can try this with either what Doug has suggested or seperately.

Please let us know if this helps.

Thanks,
Akshaya Saxena

Akshaya,

Thanks so much for the additional tips! I have been away from home for Thanksgiving but will definitely work with it when I return next week.

I must admit that I really don't know what a proxy server is which has added to the confusion.

I certainly appreciate you and Doug taking time to help with this matter.

Hi Doug,
I have tried unsuccessfully to correct this problem by adjusting the settings, as advised by you and Akshaya. Would you please give instructions, if time permits, on the other method you suggested as listed below?

The other is to set up a proxy server that can handle HTTPS connections. I did this (using privoxy on a linux box), and once a valid HTTPS proxy is named in the Advanced Proxy Settings Elements is happy.

I have no idea what privoxy on a linux box is as my knowledge of computers is very limited. I am wondering if this is something I need to buy or download or maybe I should just forget ordering through Elements.

Thanks for any help in this matter.

Hi Sharon,

Probably best to forget the alternative proxy server for https connections (a "linux box" is a computer running the Linux operating system instead of Windows). It's way too complex a solution at this point.

Verify the following settings in Internet Explorer:
Tools -> Internet Options
Connections Tab -> LAN Settings

All items:
Automatically detect settings
Use automatic configuration script
Use a proxy server for your LAN

should be unchecked. If any are checked, uncheck them and then
start Elements. If Elements was running, exit and start it again.
If you don't exit and restart Elements won't detect the changed settings.

Doug,
I think the reason it is not working is that when I uncheck "use proxy server for your LAN" it will not stay unchecked. Every time I go back to see if it is still unchecked it is checked again and there is no place to select "apply". I may just have to forget about ordering through Elements. This has been very frustrating.
Thanks for your suggestions.

Sharon,

Are you running any type of pop-up blocker, parental control, or ad suppression software? Is your Internet Explorer the standard Microsoft IE or is supplied by your internet service provider?

Doug

Doug,
I don't remember ordering or installing a pop-up blocker but pop-ups are being blocked through Internet Explorer. It is set on Medium. I do not have parental control and I haven't installed ad suppression software. I do have Ad-Aware and Spybot but don't think that is what you mean. I believe my Internet Explorer is the standard Microsoft.

I have called my internet provider, Cox-Internet about this problem and they checked the settings but said they can't help with this particular problem which has to do with Adobe. Maybe they can tell me how to make the LAN setting stay off. I haven't tried that.

Thanks,
Sharon

Sharon,

If you go to Tools->Internet Options->Connections>LAN Settings and click on the Advanced button in the Proxy Server section, what values are filled in in the Proxy Settings dialog?

Hi Doug,

In the Window called Proxy Settings the only things filled out are:
HTTP: Proxy address 127.0.0.1
Port: 8010
Exceptions: Do not use proxy server for adresses beginning with:
127.0.0.1;setup.msn.com;memberservices.msn.co

One of my attempts in correcting this problem was to delete the proxy settings then I opened E3 and tried to place an order It still did not work. I returned to these settings to add them back and they were already there. When I did this I did not do anything with those numbers under "exceptions".

Sharon,

Ok, something is running on your machine that is resetting the settings--no doubt associated with the proxy server (that is also running on your machine) listening on port 8010. Has anyone ever installed MSN software that included parental controls on this machine? I ask because of the msn.com entries in the exceptions list.

If you are running Windows XP and want me to look at your machine using the Remote Help facility I'd be happy to. Send an invitation to dsteinfeld@passport.com.

Hi Doug,

The email I sent you came back with the following info. What I sent to you in that email is below this. My email address is:
SFWalton@cox-internet.com

Each of the following recipients was rejected by a remote mail server.
The reasons given by the server are included to help you determine why
each recipient was rejected.

Recipient: <dsteinfeld@passport.com>
Reason: 5.7.1 Unable to relay for dsteinfeld@passport.com

I do not think that anything like that has been installed on my computer. My kids are grown and have been away from home for several years now. If you have time to do the remote help I would like that. If you are not at your computer to get this message as I send it just email instructions as to a time. I live in Louisiana in the Central time zone. It is 3:30 here and I plan to be home for the rest of the day and will be here tomorrow afternoon.

Thanks,
Sharon
