Currently the Crop tool has hidden complexities that fool the inexperienced user - specifically, it can end up silently resampling. My proposal is that the tool is split into 2: "basic" and "advanced":

Basic - standard crop functionality; bounded by the image dimensions [can't pull the handles outside of the image]; simple aspect ratio settings, along with presets and a "same as image" button.

Advanced - what we have now, but with the addition of a resampling method control which would "light up" when resampling was going to be done and allow the choice of algorithm.

Colin, if it does not take a lot of your time, could you brieföly explain what is "resampling"? Thanks.

Easy. The destruction or [worse] creation of pixels in an image. If you change the pixel dimensions of an image, pixels are either removed [downsampling] or extra ones are created [upsampling].

I'd prefer if any cropping would just default to no resampling whatsoever. If I'd want to resample an image I'd use the resize/resample function.

I basically agree Alexander, but I was assuming that someone likes the brain-damaged mode that the current tool offers. Hence, my suggestion to make it more obvious.

At least one can always use rectangular marquee and the Crop command ...
