Can't use PSE 3.0 Mac if PDF graphic clip from OS X Preview is on the clipboard.
This is the unformatted text-only version of this page: Can't use PSE 3.0 Mac if PDF graphic clip from OS X Preview is on the clipboard.
James_Garvin@adobeforums.com 12-12-2004, 10:40 PM Actually, I can quit it from the dock, just not using PSE 3 menus. Can't create a new file, use File: Open, Photoshop Elements: Quit Photoshop Elements or access Preferences. Clips on the clipboard from other apps, like Adobe Reader 6 seem to work fine. One way out of the lock is use File: Open Recently Edited File ->, then cut or copy anything to the clipboard. Once the Preview clip is replaced, normal functions in PSE 3 are restored. I've repaired permissions on the OS X disk, but that didn't seem to help. I checked the source PDF files' security settings only to find out there were no limitations, or I was the owner with read/write privileges. Preview seems to have no (visible) security settings. Anyone able to duplicate this?
Barbara_Brundage@adobeforums.com 12-12-2004, 11:09 PM No, it works fine for me--actually better than when something from Word is on the clipboard. Have you tried this with m ore than one PDF? Maybe it's something about that particular pdf?
James_Garvin@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 07:22 AM I haven't tried it with every other application, just Adobe Reader 6. I did try it with multiple PDF's and always get the same result. I've tried it with all three types of creators, Reader 6, PSE 3, and OS X / Preview. It appears only PDF clips cause a problem, PSD and JPG's don't. If no one else can duplicate this, I have to consider reinstalling OS X. Not my preferred solution!
Lou_M@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 08:35 AM Wow, Jim, the exact same thing happens on my machine.
I opened up a PDF created by OS X in Preview, copied it to the clipboard, opened up Elements 3, and I could not use Preferences, Quit, or File-->New. Activity Monitor was showing Elements using 50-75% of my 1.3 GHz CPU, too.
If I then used any other app to copy to the clipboard, then Elements worked fine and the CPU utilization went back down to 5% or less.
Robert_Coder@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 08:43 AM I too have a similiar problem with the Mac Preview when viewing a pdf. Espeially if I do a copy and paste. No problem with Acrobat. As a result I have to becareful to make sure that Preview is not ever opened when using Elements 3. I think the Adobe probably will have an updater somewhere along the way to correct this and possibly other problems.

James_Garvin@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 08:44 AM Lou, your note about µP utilization is interesting. I wasn't running Activitiy Monitor, so I didn't see that. I can tell you my TiBook G4/667's fan runs on high constantly after I've worked a while in PSE 3. I'll use Activity Monitor to keep an eye on that.
Uhu... It's fully replicable here as well. Did any of you fill a bug report
? The PDF document was actually a printout of Safari in PDF.
I also discovered this : if you try to create a new document from scratch
(blank) while something of Preview PDF is on the clipboard, you get a
message that PSE3 couldn't because the document is in an unsupported colour
mode and you're asked to convert it. That could explain the problem...
Something about a wrongfully set colour mode. Doing so brings a blank
document, the size of the clipboard, and then you're able to work with the
content of the clipboard in PSE3. But you still loose the Quit and
Preferences commands.
Strangely, pasting the same image into PS CS worked just fine.
Same document, copied from Acrobat 6 instead of Preview worked fine in PSE3.
Choosing Quit from the Dock caused PSE3 to "unexpectedly quit", some of the
times.

James_Garvin@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 10:12 AM Thanks, Ray. I couldn't create a new document from scratch. Apple-N or Apple-O didn't work. I could open up the File Browser and select a document or use a Recent Document, but that's all. Sounds like this issue is all over the map: Some users have no problems, some part of the problem and others can't use PSE 3 at all. Your observation about color modes may be useful, though I find it difficult to believe that PSE 3 wouldn't recognize any color space and mode out there. Perhaps that hints at a bug in Preview, not PSE 3?
I tried the same thing with PSE2 and it worked fine, I can copy and paste
stuff from Preview to PSE2 without any problem. So, this tends to make it a
PSE3 problem.
James_Garvin@adobeforums.com 12-13-2004, 10:30 AM All things now considered, I think it's time to file that bug report!
voyager@isl.is 02-02-2005, 10:37 AM I can exactly reproduce this odd behaviour including the workaround of copying something else to the clipboard. Apparently pretty much anything seems to work: a few lines of text etc.
That would be a bug then, huh?!
Cheers Martin
Beth_Haney@adobeforums.com 02-02-2005, 11:12 AM All of you are clearly using OS X, but you guys might want to see if you are all running exactly the same version or if this is happening across the board. Adobe will probably want that information included in the bug report, too.
voyager@isl.is 02-03-2005, 07:44 PM All the latest and greatest:
OSX 10.3.7, Preview 2.1.0 and PSE 3.0
PowerBook 15", 1.5 GHz, 1 GB RAM
Cheers Martin
Jon_Guild@adobeforums.com 02-04-2005, 03:01 PM I have the same problem. If I log out, and then in again, everything's fine, but this is a pain since I have to close all my apps. I like the idea above regarding copying else to the Clipboard.
Here are my vitals:
OS X (10.3.7); Adobe Reader 6.0.2*; PSE 3.0
PowerBook 12.1"; 1.33 GHz; 768 MB RAM
(* I use Reader to open PDFs, not Preview. Also, I regularly print to PDF within OS X.)
amigojamie@adobeforums.com 04-28-2005, 06:11 PM I have this problem too.
If I copy any object apart from text in InDesign, and then go to PSE3, I lose Quit, New, Close, etc.
Logging out was becoming tedious, so thanks for the workout, ie copying something new to the clipboard, that works well.
Definately a bug that needs ironed out!
My specs are:
MacOS X 10.3.9, eMac 1.25GHz, 512Mb.
I'm using the Try Out version of Photoshop Elements 3.0x199.
Thanks
Jamie
