I am new to Encore. These are the steps I followed. New project, import an .AVI as an asset, create a timeline, drag the .AVI on a timeline, then Import Subtitles as a text script selecting an adb.txt file that I paid to have created. In the monitor the subtitles play. In the preview mode they do not. When I do File > Build DVD > DVD Disc the subtitles are not displayed on the disc.
It is only a 6 minute video that I want the video and the subtitles to automatically play - just as it appears in the monitor. I did the check project button and it stated that I didn't have an end action set. I don't need it to do anything when it is done with playing the video and subtitles the first time.
Please help.
Thanks,
Angie

You will need to specify that the subtitles are displayed when you link the button to the timeline.
Select the button that is linked to the timeline, then select Object > Specify Link. In addition to selecting the timeline, also select the subtitle track number below that you want displayed.

Thanks for your quick reply.
Is the button you refer to the icon (T with ... underneath) to the left of the the label Subtitle 1?
When I click that icon shows the T... I see the subtitles in the monitor. Then I go to Object > Specify Link, but it is grayed out.
Please clarify.

I just read your post from yesterday where you wrote
"a button must always be selected when you enter a menu, so you would never have a case where no button is selected (but you can fake this with a button with no subpictures set to be your default button, although this is a usability design flaw)."
I want to create a DVD to use as the source for creating VHS copies, so I think it would be OK to use a fake button process.
If you agree, can you explain how to do this?

I believe what you found was the "display subtitles" button in Preview? That will show them in Preview, but doesn't affect the project in any way. You want to do this from the Menu editor- select the button, then choose Object > Specify Link.
Not sure I understand what you are asking in your last post. Do you want to create a menu that shows no selected button?

Thanks jbowen for the tip, I couldn't find this answer anywhere on Adobe Help Center nor the Encore knowledge base.
Is there another way to do this? I'm surprised the option to select a subtitle doesn't show on the property panel of the button.

You link via the Specify Link dialog and choose your audio and/or subtitle track to activate.
Then when you link the button, the link shows which audio and/or subtitle track is selected, e.g. Timeline:Chapter 1, A2, S2, which means the button is linked to chapter 1 of timeline, and audio track is 2, subtitle track is 2.
