I think they (we) are talking about a different toggle. One that would toggle on/off the new auto-select properties for Text Layer found in CS3. Or some option as to how the Auto-Select behaves for text.

Wade Zimmerman wasn't talking about toggling the "auto select" behavior of the move tool.

He was talking about toggling the "select text like a sheet of glass" behavior that you get with the "auto select" (or non-auto select with command key held down) behavior of the move tool.

Yes if we could have that effect removed temporarily by user choice then this make more sense then to completely get rid of it. Who ever suggested getting rid of it was not be responsible, how they were able to convince anyone to get rid of it entirely is beyond and why is the real question.

The concept is good. I can now Auto-Select click on small or narrow font and I target its Text Layer, not the Background. The change has saved me a lot of frustration. But the OP has a legitimate concern, just needs to be tweaked a little.

Charles yes that is good for your needs but sometimes when strong opinions and a lot of user voice a very strong opinion with out considering the other users the feature is often implemented but such a way that it some times does not really make sense for everyone.

So in this case what might be the normal would say b what it is now, the way you like to work. Then other would be either a way to change that in the preferences or simply hit a keyboard key or two and you can then click anywhere in the text area except the text itself to get to where you want. It would not change anything for you and give other users the tools they need.

I have had problems working both ways not having access to both behaviors.

Wade,
I don't think we are disagreeing. Either an option/toggle to revert to the previous auto-select behavior, or tweaking the "hot" area around the text to not be so broad are in order.
I am only pointing out that this behavior change in CS3 does have its benefits, but certainly needs to be modified somehow to allow auto-selecting "through" a text layer.
