Default Catalog confusion

I have two My Catalog.psa files and don’t know if this is a problem or not. I would like to delete one if it is a problem and get back to normal. I do not want more than one catalog!

I discovered this duplication when I attempted to back up my catalog which I have done twice previously. I selected File/Catalog/Open by mistake (Should have selected File/Backup). There was no catalog to open which confused me as my Organizer was working just fine – tags, collections, etc. Therefore I elected to create a catalog and named it My Catalog.psa which appeared to work just fine. After doing that I could select File/Catalog/Open and there it was.

In Windows Explore now though I seem to have some duplication. Under Documents and Settings/All Users/Application Data/Adobe I have two “My Catalog.psa” files. One 3038 KB and the other slightly larger (3048 KB). The one which I believe is the proper catalog is in the proper default folder: All Users/Application Data/Adobe/Catalogs. It was created this week probably when I noticed no catalog and created it as described above.

The other My Catalog.psa is in a folder in Application Data/Adobe/PhotoShop Elements/Catalogs. Created in January 2005. At this point I think this one can be deleted.

There is another folder under Application Data/Adobe (not Application Data/Adobe/PhoptShop Elements)which I don’t understand - “Catalog Folders”. This folder contains “My Catalog” with several 1 KB .dat folders and another folder called “My Catalog – 1”. Are these the program files which were mentioned in other recent threads about catalog problems? I would expect to find program files further down in Windows Explore under Program Files.

Phil – (sorry to be so wordy. Couldn’t figure out any way to shorten this)

I have not explored this but from other posts I seem to recall that the actual cataog file(s) is a hidden file and that there is at least one more obvious one that is actually a template for creating new catalogs.

I wouldn't delete anything till I was sure what it was. Have you tried opening these various catalogs to see what they contain?

Maybe a search on the forum would find some of the old threads that dealt with catalog file location.

Karin Sue - Thanks for the suggestions. I will search the forum for the threads on catalog problems. I know I read two on this subject recently. I do have the show hidden files option checked so that isn't the problem.

I did come up with an idea to confirm whether or not I have two separate catalogs and I do. I scanned an image that had the words CATALOG TEST on it and it is in one of the Organizers but not other. Also there are several images in the other Organizer that are not in the one that is apparently the active one. I definitely have to get all the images into one and delete the other before I do anything more on PSE.

If anyone has a suggestion as to how to merge these two catalogs please advise. I will be searching this subject on the forum for this information too.

Sure don't know how the second catalog got started. I would suspect my dog had gotten his paws on the computer but I don't have a dog.

Phil
