I think ACR do an excellent job at processing Fujifilm RAW files, especially those of the SR sensor. Congrats !
Unfortunately ACR3.3 can't read compressed RAF files.
So I was wondering if Adobe is planning to support compressed RAF files.
I assume it should be a simple matter since Fuji is probably using the same type of lossless compression type that Canon and Nikon.
Any information will be appreciated.
If you point to me some documentation on the compression format Fuji is using, I'll consider adding support. I'm not aware of any public documentation, and Fuji is not providing any private documentation (yes, Adobe asked). Until then, I have no intention of supporting compressed Fuji RAF files.
I strongly suggest that you don't ever use this feature of Fuji software, since it makes the files unreadable to non-Fuji products. Files directly from the camera are fine, since Fuji's cameras don't directly support compression.
DNG does a better job of compression Fuji RAF files anyway. So if all you care about is Adobe's raw converter, just use DNG to compress the files.
it also can't read unsupported, encrypted formats. there is no legitimate reason photographers should not be able to get unfettered access to their raw picture data, but it seems many camera makers feel that's not your call to make. hence data frequently remains encypted and/or undocumented.
if a certain camera make or technology is important to your workflow, make sure that camera maker knows you are demanding the option to save your raw files in a portable and open format free of proprietary claim. ultimately it's your data to lose.
Yes, the DNG compression option is another alternative I tried, but then the DNG files converted from RAF don't really work with others programs except ACR.
I'm glad to know the compressed RAF files are not being ignored by the ACR team.
BTW. Yesterday I was converting some RAF files and noticed 2 things about ACR renderings.
It produces some strange artifacts with highlights and the noise removal of the Fuji Raw converter works much better.
But ACR is miles ahead in flexibility and when it comes to exploiting the High Dynamic range data.
If you want I can provide the problematic RAF files.
Just in case you were not aware of that issue.
Well I guess I'd have to live with the Uncompressed RAWs.
Is quite uncomfortable to rely in just Fuji for the longetivity of these RAF photos.
Thomas, don't know why your reply was deleted.
I found a freware RAW converter that can open and process compressed RAF.
Maybe you can inquire about the compressor format they use.
Don't know how they managed to do it, maybe they hacked the Fuji Hyper-Utility sotware.
It is called S7RAW, really slow but it can open compressed RAFs.
