Default Raw (SR2) and DNG look different in Camera Raw

Hi
Can anyone tell me why the Sony R1 .SR2 files do not look the same in ACR as the DNG files created from that same file?
The .SR2 files look much closer to the matching JPG files.
The white balance on the files as displayed by ACR is different, as are the default settings ACR chooses. Even if I set the WB to be the same, and use <Ctrl>+ to view without settings, the files are different.

What version of the DNG Converter did you use to create the files, and what version of Camera Raw are you using?

Hi Thomas
Latest versions of both DNG 3.2, 3.3 Camera Raw
There's also some slight sizing difference between the two files. When I switch between them in ACR, it's as if I moved slightly nearer.
if you can tell me how, I'm happy to upload an example. Not all of them are that different, but I have a couple that are very different.

They should both be 3.3.

Also, it sounds like you have DNG to recover unused edges. That would make the DNG files a little larger.

You say not all are that different. Are any exactly the same?

I just tried two routes for an R1 SR2 I downloaded:
SR2 > ACR 3.3 > Photoshop
SR2 > 3.3 DNG Converter > ACR 3.3 > Photoshop

Making them layers of a file, and using "difference" blending mode, shows them to have identical pixels.

(I didn't "recover edges" first).

I just tried the same test using the versions Mike used - ACR 3.3 and 3.2 DNG Converter, and also directly comparing the results from the two DNG Converters.

The results were considerably different. The 3.2 DNG was "dull" in comparison both to the 3.3 DNG and the ACR 3.3 SR2. The 3.2 and 3.3 DNG Converters (at least sometimes) handle R1 SR2s differently.

The Sony R1 was not officially supported until ACR/DNG 3.3. While there was some preliminary support in ACR/DNG 3.2, it was not finished yet.

1. Always use the most recent version of the DNG Converter (currently 3.3).

2. When using the DNG Converter on files from a camera model that is not on Adobe's officially supported list, never discard the originals files. You should probably re-convert them when a version of the DNG Converter comes out that does officially support your camera model.

Hi
Thanks for the quick replies, and Barry, thanks for the research.
Apologies for wasting everyone's time. I ALWAYS have the latest versions of everything, and this time it went wrong - twice.
First, I had in fact downloaded and installed 3.3, but it was not in the same folder as the shortcut.

Second, I checked for the latest version when Thomas asked, but in the wrong place:
<http://www.adobe.com/products/dng/main.html>
which speaks about 3.2 now having some feature. The above line confirmed for me that I was indeed running the latest version - I didn't get to the download page.
The SR2 and DNG files now do indeed look identical.

Mike
