PhotoshopNews has posted the second part of Jeff Schewe's (oh, yeah, that's me), of _my_ DNG Workfow article outlining the use of Adobe DNG Converter as an image ingestion/conversion tool.
DNG Workflow / Part II <http://photoshopnews.com/2005/05/25/dng-workflow-part-ii/>
I applaud Adobe for leading a push for a common RAW file structure.
After reading Jeff's parts I & II and playing a little with DNG 3.1 there are three items that I see directly that need to be improved in DNG.
1. There needs to be more flexibility in renaming files. It doesn't even give the limited support that Bridge has. My personal preference would be YYYY.MM.DD_cntr.dng . The date stamp should be for the shoot date, NOT the current day. The cntr is an X digit long counter (like in Bridge).
2. There needs to be an option to select desired files instead of having to select a whole folder.
3. It would be nice if the choose files dialog box could allow for user defined sorting (like in Word when using File/Open where one can sort by type & date).
An nice option would also be able to add a meta data template during conversion, i.e.- for ingestion of files from a reader.
I second the request for the expanded file naming. Currently I use ExifRenamer to rename all my files based on the EXIF capture date (I use yymmdd-hhmmss) but it would be great to have that power built into the DNG converter. It would allow me to skip one more time-consuming step in my workflow.
