Photoshop's font source - basic query
Using GoLive for web design, and Photoshop 5.5 for editing banner images, on Win98 PC. My knowledge of Photoshop is not brilliant to say the least.
I need to know exactly where Photoshop 5.5 expects to find its fonts, as I am not getting it to use a newly added font successfully, nor, also, existing stored fonts.
Banner image in question is a .psd file with two layers (a) text heading and (b) logo. Originally designer used Helvetica Narrow Bold Oblique for text. If I open up the text layer on current PC, I receive message that 'Helvetica Narrow etc. is missing for text layer and font substitution will occur. Continue?'
If I OK this message I get Type Tool window, and I can change to a substitute font, say, ARIALNBI which is a TrueType font available on my PC (in Windows Font file). But if I select this, then text defaults to some basic typewriter-looking font and not ARIALNBI.
How can I get Photoshop to use required selected font? I assume there must be some option to select source of fonts but can't find it. I seem to remember this could either be in Windows Fonts by default or a file local to Photoshop.
I fully realise this is laughably basic for you guys, but I am stuck with a deadline of tomorrow with client, and would much appreciate help. I have ATM 4.0 available, but not sure if relevant or, in fact, linked to Photoshop (and if I look in Settings in the ATM it only seems interested in PostScript files).
Thanks.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
You need to install Helvetica Narrow Bold Oblique on your system, which is where Photoshop looks for its fonts. Arial is somewhat similar to the untrained eye, but if you want the original you'll have to download it from Linotype.com.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
John, thanks. The style/type of font isn't the main problem, it's where it goes on my PC which is the main issue.
As I mentioned, PhotoShop isn't picking up fonts installed (either by me or already there) in what I thought was the default directory in Windows/Fonts. I thought perhaps it had been set to pick up fonts somewhere else, perhaps in a directory local to where it is installed.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
Fonts should be installed via the Fonts applet in Control Panel.
If Photoshop is not seeing fonts installed in this way, they must be dodgy fonts I guess. :(
Sorry, can't help more.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
Thanks, John. As far as I can judge, the new fonts, plus the old existing fonts, inspecting via Control Panel, are in the Windows/Fonts directory. However, Photoshop just doesn't 'see' them and is not picking them up.
I am not sure whether having Photoshop installed on a virtual D drive and Windows being on the default C drive is making any difference, which is why I am researching whether there is any way of making Photoshop 'look' at a specific directory for its fonts.
Hopefully in the near future I will be able to upgrade to Photoshop 7 on XP Pro, and there won't be a problem.
Anyway, thanks again.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
Richard, you probably need to delete old copies of the font list file. Search your hard drive for files ending with .lst; if they are in directories relating to Photoshop, delete or rename them. Apparently under some circumstances Photoshop caches the font names in these files and then uses that list instead of looking to see which fonts are actually installed and available. Deleting the file may solve your problem. Renaming it instead might be prudent, so you can restore it if it doesn't do the trick or causes problems.

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
To put a finer point on what Michael has suggested, look for files named "AdobeFnt*.LST", where the "*" indicates that there may or may not be a number. Move these to the trash. They will rebuild themselves automatically, as needed.
DO NOT delete files named "AdobeFnt.db".

Re: Photoshop's font source - basic query
Phos - edited your post to put the .lst in ALL_CAPS to prevent O/P confusing with 1st.
