Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
I've gone through a lengthy thread on this at DPReview already, but I think my help is exhausted. :) I have PS CS2 v9.0.2, Bridge 1.0.4.6, and ACR 3.4x89 installed to C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS2\File Formats. I've verified that it is not installed anywhere else with ACR Checker. Camera Raw only appears once in the list of plugins, and I'm now able to view thumbnails of my raw files in Bridge (thanks to the clearing of that folder's cache). I still can't, for the life of me, get CS2 to recognize my files. I always get the "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document." error. Any help at this point would be appreciated.

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
People may want to know, so I'll repeat what you said on DPReview:
"I have an A64 3200+ that supports SSE and SSE2 AND I can view my plugin
information in CS2"".
In case you didn't see my last suggestion there, here it is:
If you send me one of these files (perhaps using <http://www.yousendit.com)> I will check it on my system, which I know works.
Alternatively, you could download someone else's CR2, for example from the following link, and see whether that works:
<http://www.glasslantern.com/RAWpository/>

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
Ah HA! I was able to open the CR2 from another 350D! I wonder why my camera is giving me so many problems. I have the same firmware as the picture I downloaded (1.0.3) but mine will not open in CS2... I can send you one of my files if you'd like, though I'll warn you of my poor photography skills. :)

"I can send you one of my files if you'd like".
Please send. It will be an extra diagnostic, and after all of this I want to know! My email will probably fail with a big file, so www.yousendit.com or similar may be a good idea.

I'll put it up on my domain and send you a link after work.

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
Thanks. I've had a look at it.
It didn't work in ACR for me either.
But ... it DID open in Rawshooter essentials (tropical fish), and it converted to TIFF. However, whereas a proper CR2 says at the bottom of the Rawshooter screen "Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL: [filename]", yours says "unknown: [filename]".
And Silkypix managed to open it, with bad colours, after first saying "incompatible file". Its EXIF data said "Canon unknown".
I had a look inside it. Here are a couple of tags of a proper CR2:
Make: "Canon"
Model: "Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL"
Here are the equivalent tags of yours:
Make: "Canon"
Model: "unknown"
Here is an extract from the Makernote of the proper CR2:
* Tag6: "Canon EOS 350D DIGITAL"
* Tag7: "Firmware 1.0.3"
Here is the equivalent extract from yours:
* Tag6: "unknown"
* Tag7: "Firmware 1.0.3"
As far as I can tell, it is a reasonably-correct 350D CR2, but has "lost its memory" of what it is, and just says "unknown".

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
Hmm, that sucks. I wonder if flashing new firmware would fix the problem.

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
Well, that didn't work. I reloaded 1.0.3 and I still can't view my raw files. Maybe Canon has an idea. At least I know it's not an Adobe problem now.

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
Just for clarity, in case you get into a debate with Canon.
When I said "unknown", I really did mean the character string:
hex 75 6e 6b 6e 6f 77 6e
I didn't just mean "not specified" or "default" or "absent".

Re: Cannot view Rebel XT raw in CS2
I'm not getting anywhere with Canon. I admitted that it worked with DPP and then they washed their hands of it. Here's the last response:
Thank you for writing to us. We value you as a Canon customer and
appreciate the opportunity to assist you.
The EOS Digital cameras are bundled with the software necessary to
download, view, and process RAW images. We do not support the
manipulation of RAW images in third party software applications. If you
wish to edit your RAW images in Adobe Photoshop, please use the Canon
software provided with the camera to first convert the images to JPEG or
TIFF format. Once the images have been converted, they can be accessed
in any program that supports the chosen file type.
For further information about this please refer to Adobe at
1-800-521-1976. Since we are not qualified or authorized to answer
questions regarding Adobe products, nor do we know when Adobe will make
a update available.
We hope this information is helpful to you. Please feel free to contact
us again if you have any other questions or concerns with the EOS
Digital Rebel XT.
Thank you for choosing Canon.
Sincerely,
Todd
Technical Support Representative
I also think the colors are off in the raw file, as I've taken some in RAW+JPEG and the raw files look a lot different. Then again, I know very little about them, so this may be normal. :) I've emailed you a link to a zip file with the raw and jpg files inside. Let me know what you think.
