Q: Photoshop 6.0 is running much more slowly than Photoshop 5.x -- how do I fix this?

A: Photoshop 6.0 has a bug where it checks the recently used files more often than it should. So if you've opened or saved a file to a removable drive, a network volume, or a memory card reader -- Photoshop slows down trying to check those files (even worse if the server drops off the network). Opening 30 or more files off the hard disk can flush out the old files, OR you can throw away the Photoshop preferences and restart Photoshop.

Photoshop 6.0.1 fixes this.
