Default AdobeReader -v- acroread

Hi,
I have a question about the downloads of acrobar reader from adobe.com.
A couple of weeks ago I downloaded the most recent version for my Linux Operating system:

acroread-7.0.9-2.5.i586.rpm

Yesterday I did the same and got:

AdobeReader_enu-7.0.9-1.i386.rpm

I can't now find the acroread update on the site. I have acroread installed and only the acroread software is a direct update for this. The AdobeReader doesn't appear to be.

My questions are:
1. Are these 2 products the same or am I downloading from an incorrect location.
2. If so where should I download acroread from?
3. is the acroread version I downloaded (acroread-7.0.9-2.5.i586.rpm) a valid current version of the software?

Hi Martina,

The official build is "AdobeReader_enu-7.0.9-1.i386.rpm" (from adobe.com).

Did you download the other build from somewhere else?

You should download the latest build (which is 7.0.9) from adobe.com.

I'm pretty sure I downloaded it from Adobe.com.
It makes sense to me to use the acroreead package as the standard reader that came with my linux distribution (SUSE 9) was acroread 5.10-40.
This would suggest the best upgrade path would be a later acroread package, especially since uninstalling acroread and installing AdobeReader means I can't launch pdfs from the browser. Is there an acroread plugin I should be using?
Is there any info as to the difference between the acroread package and AdobeReader package?

Martina,

(Perhaps the 'acroread' package was supplied by SuSE?)

The 'AdobeReader' package does have a browser plugin (and also an installation script for the same), so you will still be able to view PDFs in the browser.

I'm not aware of any specific differences between the two packages. Perhaps someone who knows the difference might reply here.

I'd recommend uninstalling acroread 5.10-40 and installing the AdobeReader package (either RPM or tarball installer).

Yes, the acroread packages are just renamed-AdobeReader pacage supplied by SuSE. I am not aware of any other functional difference, as long as you have the same version of both. Yet, as rightly stated by Ashutosh above, it would be better to uninstall acroread 5.10-40 and installing the AdobeReader package so as to utilize the benefits of all query and upgrade commands as well.

Deepti

To be quite clear, Acrobat Reader was renamed Adobe Reader with
version 6. About the only trace of the old name is the "acroread"
command name.
