Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slow withnvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
I try everything, newest drivers (nvidia 8800 GTS 512), older drivers, beta drivers, alternative drivers, uninstall QTime, disable OpenGL in After Effects, delete openGL plugin.... Simply, did not help. AE CS3 is abnormal slow, type text, draw and edit mask, any kind of moving element , moving windows (interface).... everything. When turn on openGL, openGL work fine, fast, smooth…., but non openGL operation (written above), still the same! I did some test and found that similar problem have with encore (not my primary application, but...). Other programs work perfectly (premiere, photoshop, illustrator…). I have core2 quad 6600 @ 3 GHz, 3 GB RAM, 8800 GTS 512 @ 2560 x 1600, win XP pro – strong configuration but unusable for AE CS3!!! I try to reduce resolution, but also, did not help.
Please, is there anyone with some solution? Is problem with AE or drivers…? Thanks.

Is problem with AE or drivers…?
Like most programs AE is resolution agnostic and will take up whatever real estate Windows let's it, but you never know... Still, since you're experiencing the problem even at lower resolutions, I would presume it's a driver problem. Both AE and Encore use hardware acceleration to draw certain parts of the UI (Encores Preview window, AE's layer windows etc.) that are not specifically tied to other OpenGL functions. Can you verify in the prefs that AE "sees" all that power and supports all features? Did you try changing options such as "Accelerate Effects using..." in the AE prefs? Do you use any special settings for hardware antialiasing and such stuff on your graphics card?

Hmm, doesn't sound like a common problem...
IntelliPoint software is known to cause GUI problems, uninstall it if you have it (the mouse will work anyways.)
Here are a bunch of other things to try: <http://generalspecialist.com/2007/02/troubleshooting-after-effects-7.asp>

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
hmmmm, I am afraid that this is big problem. I do not have IntelliPoint software, AE prefs is perfectly tuned up. Now, I call friend which just buy the same cpu, mbo and graphic card, and you guess, absolute the same problem!!!! It is obviously that something is very very wrong, redraw did not have any acceleration at all. It is so slow that you can clearly see how windows show up, solids show up in composition almost like scanline render... Still I do not have solution for this.
Please help.

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
Today we have done numerous of tests to determine if there is something wrong with our gf 8800gts 512 and guess what .
Friend of mine is working in Croteam and he let us try native (nvidia) 8800gtx that is basicly the best reference for all nvidia chipset cards.
After test we had absolute same problem like with gigabyte 8800gts.
Conclusion can only be one and that is obvious that it is ADOBE mistake and i just hope someone from adobe team read forums and address this kind of bugs.
If anyone have solution for us that will help us use our 8xxx cards on QUAD BASED systems/motherboards i would gladly like to hear.
Our system specs:
asus 5pk with q6600
4 gb ram
windows xp sp2 32bit
gf 8800 gts 512mb gigabye
cheers

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
During the four or so years I've been helping people online with AE problems, I have never heard anything like what you are describing.
There must be something very specific with your system, otherwise we'd have heard of similar problems before.
The new Mac Pro's are all quad and dual quad Xeons with 8800 GPU's...
I suggest you contact support, this is so specific that none of us can help, I'm afraid.

Here's a bunch of trouble-shooting tips I've collected, you should go through the list and see if there's anything that will help:

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
Dear Jonas,
it is funny that both of us purchased same components and both fail on same test.
could it be mix between cpu mbo gfx card i cant tell. but since all adobe apps works fine with no lags (only encore shows that interface problem) i would likely blame adobe for this.
Since we both work professionally in after effects and 3d applications general (3dsmax, lightwave) we do not experience anythining like that until now.
So it would be nice to get any feedback from adobe in terms of what to do or what can be done.
We picked best parts for our new workstations and i wouldn't say that it is hardware that fails.
Also we are talkin about totaly different systems since you are using mac osx
cheers

Perhaps its the 8800's fault...
Similar problems with XSI. <http://www.xsibase.com/forum/index.php?board=15;action=display;threadid=35216;s tart=0>

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
We picked best parts for our new workstations and i wouldn't say that
it is hardware that fails.
That's simply a wrong assumption with no real value whatsoever. Sorry friend, life ain't that simple and whether it's the differences in UI libraries that Adobe, Softimage and Autodesk may be using or something else could very much become a matter of endless discussion. Likewise, quoting MAX for reference is somewhat funny, as to my knowledge it's perhaps the single app on the planet that uses more DirectX than OpenGL functions for its display stuff. So, since you know your way around computers, please be nice and give us some solid info:
- use system information to generate a report
- use Vision Lab's GL info utility to generate a ICD dump from your graphics card
- Run all DXInfo tests and generate a performance report
Then make the reports available somewhere for download. We will gladly take a look at them and provide more help. whether that is going to resolve your problems is another matter, though. But hey, you could always give us your graphics cards. I certainly don't mind getting free hardware... *giggle*

Re: Big problem with AE CS3 - abnormal slowwith nvidia 8800 GTS 512 !
dear Mylenium,
tell me are you working for adobe nvidia or so ?
if you read carefully trough my comments i have mention that we tried REFERENCE 8800 card from NVIDIA manufacture. that means there exist NO better card from any manufacturer on planet that can match NVIDIA reference one in terms of stability and build it components.
It was 8800gtx card and it also fails to work with after effects just like gigabyte card.
Also if you read same card works nice on core 2 duo MBO with e6600 and adobe cs3.
conclusion? i can't make better one than ask problem to be solved either from adobe, nvidia, asus?
anyway i will gladly provide all necessary infos to any of manufacturers needed to help/solve this problem. have run all dxdiag tests all seems fine and i would like to know URL for VISION LAB utility so i can pack up all together.
cheers
