Default Does DNG import data from Canon THM file?

I am just dipping my toe into DNG waters for the very first time. So far I've only saved two of my Canon Raw images into DNG format using ACR3.

My interest in DNG is mainly driven by the desire to avoid XMP sidecar files. But what about the Canon THM sidecar file? Does all the info (whatever that might be) contained in the THM file get transferred into a DNG file when its matching CRW is converted?

Yes. Actually, the ".THM" files directly from the camera don't contain any metadata that is not already in the ".CRW" files. Some third party software writes IPTC data into the ".THM" files, which the DNG Converter does read and include in the ".DNG" file.

Thomas,
Thanks for your very useful response. It would therefore appear that the THM files only serve a potential purpose for those photographers who do NOT want to convert to DNG. If I choose to go down the DNG route (as I probably will) then I might as well add metadata directly to the DNG file and avoid any need for handling sidecar files.

Your answer also suggests that if I choose to archive my original Raw files then there is need to keep the THM files as well.
